Tips & Tools Weekly (Vol. 20, No. 30)

17 Aug, 2015 By: Cadalyst Staff

This Week's Software Tips

Use Tool Palettes for Hatches
This useful AutoCAD tip from frequent contributor Danny Korem explains his method for adding hatch patterns to tool palettes at the right scale and predefined layer. "For frequently used hatches, the ability to set the scale, rotation, pattern, color, etc., makes this tip a no-brainer." View the complete tip and post your feedback.

Civil 3D Tip: Change Selected Region Color
Are you a Civil 3D user who likes things to turn blue when selected (the default for selected objects in AutoCAD 2015 and later), yet also wants to be able to see which corridor region is being selected? Dean Petersen shares this tip that adjusts the Corridor Feature settings to suit your preferences. "A good find in the wealth of Civil 3D settings." View the complete tip and post your feedback.

Inventor Tip: Constraint Sequence
This tip from Alex Kaplan shows Autodesk Inventor users how to constrain a sequence from one part or assembly to another. His example shows a bolt and washer, but the tip can be applied to any Inventor part or assembly. View the complete tip and post your feedback.

August Tips from Hot Tip Harry

Hot Tip Harry, Cadalyst's mysterious purveyor of customized AutoCAD code, has dispatched another bundle of great LISP tips from readers. View and download each of the latest tips using the links below, or get the entire August 2015 Hot Tip Harry batch at once.

Don't forget — you can share your original LISP tip and earn a $50 Amazon gift card if it's selected for publication. Use the "Submit Tip" button below to send us your AutoLISP routines.

Set Each Layer Current
Prolific contributor Kent Cooper once again came to the rescue for someone in the Autodesk forums with this AutoLISP routine that allows you to iterate the layer table in alphabetical order (or in reverse), setting each layer current along the way. Layers that cannot be set current (xref-dependent and frozen layers) will be skipped, but layers that are off can and will be set current. View the complete tip and post your feedback.

Standardize When You Save and Close
James Sturgess uses this LISP routine to ensure his drawings are saved with all layout tabs and model space zoomed to extents. The code can be easily modified to do anything that needs to be repeated on each layout, such as filling in title blocks or revision blocks. View the complete tip and post your feedback.

Export Layer Names
Michael Nelson offers this LISP routine for anyone wishing to export a list of layers from the current drawing to a text file. He uses it to quickly export layers for later analysis. Note that you could have a script run this routine through hundreds of DWGs in a short time. View the complete tip and post your feedback.

Control Xref Layer Colors
This LISP routine from Matt Sibum generates a list of xrefs with three options for the colors of the xref layers: Default (keep things as is), Reset (reset colors back to those in the source drawing), or Change (change all layers to a single color). If you are in a floating viewport, you also have the option of making these color changes to just that viewport. View the complete tip and post your feedback.

Submit Your Tip

Review Cadalyst's Tip Submission Guidelines, then Submit Your Tip for your favorite CAD software. Be sure to tell us which software version you use. If we publish your original, previously unpublished tip, you can earn a gift card (learn more about prizes here). Please submit only tips or code that are your original work. By submitting code, you grant Cadalyst the right to print and distribute your tip in print, digitally, and by other means. Cadalyst and individual authors retain all rights to submitted tips.

By submitting code, you agree that your code can be reused as-is or modified by other users in conjunction with AutoCAD or other software programs to gain efficiencies in that software for professional or personal use, and that your code can be shared freely among users. Users do not have the right to republish code in any manner or format (such as on a blog web site or in a printed document) for personal or commercial gain without written permission from Cadalyst and the original author.
