Tips & Tools Weekly (Vol. 20, No. 25)

This Week's Software Tips

Lynn AllenVideo Tip: Embed an Image File in AutoCAD
Attaching an image file into your AutoCAD drawing only inserts it as a reference, which means always sending the image file along with the AutoCAD drawing. (What a hassle!) Join Autodesk Technical Evangelist Lynn Allen as she shows you how to embed an image file so it becomes part of the drawing file! Watch the video

Menu Macro for Changing the Tilemode Variable
This tip from Jack Nardi explains how to customize your AutoCAD toolbar with a macro that switches the Tilemode variable, making it easier to move between paper space and model space in AutoCAD. View the complete tip and post your feedback.

Revit Tip: Area Plans
Andria Lynch reminds Revit users about the value of area plans for commercial architecture projects that need to include life safety plans in drawing sets. Andria uses an area plan instead of a standard floor plan view to schedule smoke compartments, suites, and building areas —making it easier to report the values. View the complete tip and post your feedback.

Inventor Tip: Change the Mass Properties of a Part or Assembly
Frequent contributor David Gaskill shows Inventor users how to override the mass properties of a part or assembly. This tip works well for parts that omitted internal pieces or parts that were created without much detail. View the complete tip and post your feedback.

July Tips from Hot Tip Harry

Hot Tip Harry, Cadalyst's mysterious purveyor of customized AutoCAD code, has dispatched another bundle of great LISP tips from readers. View and download each of the latest tips using the links below, or get the entire July 2015 Hot Tip Harry batch at once.

Don't forget — you can share your original LISP tip and earn a $50 Amazon gift card if it's selected for publication. Use the "Submit Tip" button below to send us your AutoLISP routines.

Navigate Multiple Layouts
When the number of layout tabs is greater than the number that can be shown in the layout tab area, navigating them manually can become tedious and, in some cases, almost impossible. Alan Houston created this LISP routine to help navigate drawings with a large number of layouts. View the complete tip and post your feedback.

Persistent Grips
When working with long polylines and splines, you may find it desirable to have persistent grips to help with visibility and printing. This LISP routine from Brian Bennett will create "point" entities at the endpoints and vertices of lines, polylines, and splines. View the complete tip and post your feedback.

Exaggerated Offset
Leland Leahy uses this LISP routine in the civil engineering industry when working with profile views with exaggerated scales. For example, with a scale of 1"=20' horizontal and 1"=5' vertical, set the exaggeration to 4, and this command will scale your offsets to generate the correct geometry. View the complete tip and post your feedback.

Quick Edit or Properties for Civil 3D Objects
This routine, also from Leland Leahy, will open up the correct properties or editing command depending on the object selected in AutoCAD Civil 3D. For example, if you select a pipe network structure, the Structure Properties dialog box will open; if you select an alignment, the Alignment Properties dialog box will open. View the complete tip and post your feedback.

Submit Your Tip

Review Cadalyst's Tip Submission Guidelines, then Submit Your Tip for your favorite CAD software. Be sure to tell us which software version you use. If we publish your original, previously unpublished tip, you can earn a gift card (learn more about prizes here). Please submit only tips or code that are your original work. By submitting code, you grant Cadalyst the right to print and distribute your tip in print, digitally, and by other means. Cadalyst and individual authors retain all rights to submitted tips.

By submitting code, you agree that your code can be reused as-is or modified by other users in conjunction with AutoCAD or other software programs to gain efficiencies in that software for professional or personal use, and that your code can be shared freely among users. Users do not have the right to republish code in any manner or format (such as on a blog web site or in a printed document) for personal or commercial gain without written permission from Cadalyst and the original author.
