This Week's Software Tips
Update Drawing Details in AutoCAD
It’s all in the details! Nearly all of us draw details in our AutoCAD drawings, only to find they need updating should our designs change. Did you know that if you work in 3D, your details update automatically? Not only that, they take only a few minutes to add to any drawing. In this video tip from Cadalyst and Lynn Allen, you’ll learn how to add details to your drawings in no time at all! Watch the video
Determine DWG File Version
Here's a trick from Michael Partenheimer that can help you determine what DWG format a particular DWG file is — without AutoCAD. View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Explode Text to Polylines
Do you ever need to outline a word to generate linework for a sign — or anything else, for that matter? A colleague of tipster Michael Viscetto suggested the express tool TxtExp command to accomplish this task. View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Inventor Tip: Change a Dimension Style Once a Dimension Is Placed on a Drawing
This tip from David Gaskill is useful when you need to mix and match dimension styles on an Autodesk Inventor drawing. View the complete tip and post your feedback.
July Tips from Hot Tip Harry
Hot Tip Harry, Cadalyst's mysterious purveyor of customized AutoCAD code, has dispatched another bundle of great LISP tips from readers. View and download each of the latest tips using the links below, or get the entire July 2014 Hot Tip Harry batch at once.
Make LISP Functions on the Fly
James Maeding sent in these nice examples of defining LISP functions on the fly. One of the two examples provided defines the LISP functions L1, L2, L3 … L255 used to create layers with certain properties. The other one defines the LISP functions C1, C2, C3 … C255 used to change the color of selected entities. View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Text to Mtext Stack Option
Tipster Tomislav Vargek has added another option to a previously submitted tip (#3727, by Kent Cooper) that already contained three ways to join text and mtext into a single mtext object. Tomislav has added an option to stack text into fractions or other stacked text divided by a horizontal line. View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Additional 3D View Control Functions
Philip Schlickenmaier frequently works with 3D views. However, there are times that the built-in isometric view controls don't meet his needs, especially when the far and near edges visually align in the wireframe visual style. View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Redefine Block Insertion Point
Amir Sattarian has created a routine to easily redefine the insertion point of a block. A positive feature of this routine is that existing insertions of the block are not moved, even though the insertion point is changed. View the complete tip and post your feedback.
