Recommended Reading for CAD Managers

CAD Manager's Toolbox: This guide is light on CAD, but heavy on management — and it contains some great insights.

I've never recommended a book in the "CAD Manager's Toolbox" column before, but this time I'm going to make an exception. Recently, I read a book by Jim Collins called Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap ... and Others Don't — and it was great indeed.

While Good to Great is essentially a management book, not a CAD book, I found the viewpoint to be very relevant for CAD managers nonetheless. The core message I took away is that you succeed because you focus on doing the things you do well a little better every day via leadership.

There is even an assertion that no company was ever successful just because they bought the latest software — sounds like heresy to CAD managers, right? But further reading reveals that successful companies implement software that helps them to better execute the tasks they already do.

If you want to improve your management chops and peer inside the mind of senior management, this book is a great read that doesn't take very long to get through.
