IT/CAD Manager Wins $2,000 in Cadalyst's "Where's Harry?" Contest15 Dec, 2004
Whitfield is IT manager at Martin & Martin Civil Engineers and Surveyors in Las Vegas, Nevada. He manages day-to-day operations of the network and LAN environment, and even offers his CAD expertise around the office as needed -- even if it means drafting, he says. "Yes, I can still do drafting."
Hot Tip Harry, Cadalyst's column of AutoCAD tips from our readers, is moving to Cadalyst.com (click here for archives). Harry himself was said to be on the move as well, and in the "Where's Harry?" contest, Cadalyst readers were asked to determine Harry's fictitious location. Participants could take a short tour of new features of Cadalyst.com, which has recently expanded to four portal sites devoted to AEC, manufacturing, CAD management, and GIS. During the tour, users could pick up clues to help determine Harry's whereabouts, then enter a drawing for the $2,000 prize.
Like Whitfield himself, Harry turned up in Las Vegas -- "Standing in the Buffet Line at Caesars Palace."
Whitfield reports he has been working in the AEC industry as an IT/CAD professional for more than 9 years. "I've been using AutoCAD since Release 12 for DOS. At Martin & Martin, we are currently using [Land Desktop] 2004 with Civil, Survey, and Raster add-on packages, but looking to move to LDT 2005."
Whitfield, who is cross-disciplined in civil and structural engineering, began his career as an architectural designer/draftsman, then moved to IT consulting, followed by a position as IT/CAD manager for HOK Architects in Washington, D.C. "When I was with HOK, I was part of the alpha/beta testing group that took part in helping develop Architectural Desktop R2 to R4."
