HP laptop AMD Graphic card = Heaps of trouble

As requested, the system information (according to Windows’ System Information, AMD Radeon Settings and Piriform Software’s Speccy) is as follows:

 

Describe your system:

  • AMD Graphics Card
    • AMD Radeon R6 Graphics (Primary); AMD Radeon R7 M360 (Linked)
  • Desktop or Laptop System
    • Laptop: HP Pavilion Notebook 15-ab010la
  • Operating System
    • Microsoft Windows 10, 64-bit version (with the current Creators Update released earlier this year).
  • Driver version installed
    • Radeon Software Version 17.4.2 (released April 11, 2017)
  • Display Devices
    • The screen this laptop comes with. Sorry, in Windows Device Administrator it is listed as a generic PnP Monitor, Speccy also names it as such. I don’t regularly use a projector/second monitor with this computer, except when making presentations to my students -hardly the right moment to play War Thunder.
  • Motherboard + Bios Revision
    • Motherboard: Hewlett-Packard Model 80B5 (P0) Version 81.32
    • BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. F.45 (28-04-2017)
  • CPU/APU
    • AMD A10-8700P Radeon R6, 10 Compute Cores 4C+6G 1.80 GHz

    • The… regular HP Pavillion notebooks power supply? I couldn’t find any info on this one neither on Windows’ information programs nor with Speccy.
  • RAM
    • 12.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 798MHz (11-11-11-28) of which 11.4 GB are available for the system, according to Windows’ System Information.

Now for the description of the problem:

 

In the end of 2015 I bought an HP Pavilion Notebook model 15-ab010la to use as a regular computer -you know, surfing the web, making both text documents and presentations, nothing too intensive- and to play some online games (World of Warplanes/Tanks back then, but then I discovered War Thunder in early 2016, so that's the main game I play on this machine).

 

Since the beginning, the graphic card this computer comes with has given me many headaches. One of the reasons I stopped playing World of Warplanes/Tanks is that I could only play that game if I set the the graphics card as if the computer was running only on battery power. Any other configuration -balanced graphics or optimum performance of the graphics card- would make the game drag to a crawl, with less than 1 fps and a serious, serious delay in the connection to their servers (unfortunately, that support forum discussion/support ticket seems to have been deleted by wargaming.net, so I can't provide the screen caps of those problems).

 

Then I discovered War Thunder and it ran without any issues... until mid July 2016, in which a message appeared every time I started the game stating that my graphics card is using only from 8,000 MiB to 9,200 MiB, depending how much I use the computer before starting War Thunder [Image Temp1.jpg of the attached files below]. This isn't as bothersome as it seems, but makes War Thunder bump my graphics to the mid-quality rank even if I was using high quality graphics before without any noticeable problem (no hangs, high ping or anything else).

 

Oh, but that was just the beginning of the troubles. Since September, Microsoft, Windows 10 and its Automatic Updates decided to recognize my graphics card as an Radeon R8 M365DX and a Radeon R6. If I let Windows install automatically the recommended drivers, everything but the OS and some simple programs crawl into a halt. And when I say everything, I DO mean Everything: even watching YouTube videos in Firefox becomes a chore (launching WarThunder states that the graphics card has only 12 MiB available for use. Obviously, it takes ages to get to the main menu just to crash when trying to quit). I had to download a tool from Microsoft to "hide" those updates from Windows Update so it doesn't install it every time a big series of update packs come from Microsoft (and if you know your computers, you should know that Microsoft releases a big update every first Tuesday of every month) [Image Temp6.jpg of the attached files below].

 

That would drive anyone mad, but the funny thing is that not even AMD's software is sure what graphic card my laptop has. According to AMD's own Radeon Settings program, this computer has an AMD Radeon 6 Graphics (Primary) and a AMD Radeon R7 M360 (Linked) graphics... card? Chipset? Nifty-combo-thingy? Well, whatever it's name is [Images Temp2.jpg, Temp3.jpg, Temp4.jpg and Temp5.jpg of the attached files below]. When running the regular update procedure from AMD Radeon Settings, it installs new drivers, reboots the computer, and then makes it impossible for me to use the computer -the same problems as the ones with Windows Update happen- or even accessing the Radeon Settings program, stating that no AMD products are currently installed on the machine [Image Temp7.jpg of the attached files below]. Even when disregarding this message, once again all graphics-intensive programs crawl back into a halt when using the most recent drivers (17.7.2, as the time of this post according to Radeon Settings Software).

 

The only solution I’ve found is to reinstall and keep running the drivers released on April 11, the 17.4.2 version of the AMD Radeon graphics drivers. But as of late, War Thunder seems to spontaneously crash mid-game when using these drivers, displaying a black screen for 10 seconds and then returning to the game as usual, but spamming the sound with glitched audio -think of different pitched screeches playing at random intervals- until the computer is rebooted.

 

I don’t know what else to do: both the Windows and the official AMD drivers for my graphic card seems to not be the correct ones, and now even the auto-updater fails when trying to get the newest version of them. I don’t mind using a surpassed version of the drivers, but I fear that as time goes on and on, not being able to upgrade it will become a real problem, not just with War Thunder, but with other programs I run on this PC.
