How Instagram Created a New Craze for Sports Fans

More people are turning to Instagram to find the finest, funniest and craziest plays from college and professional football, basketball baseball, tennis and other sports.

Where do sports fanatics turn for highlights and hilarious athlete bloopers?

To ESPN for sure but Instagram, Facebook’s mobile photo and video sharing app is quickly becoming the go-to site for some of the best memorable moments in sports.

Instagram accounts like GreatestHiglightsFooballJukes, SickCatchesATPWorldTennis, ItsBasketballBro and BestCelebrations, as well as certified accounts from athletes and teams, give sports fans photos and videos they watch, comment on, and share with family and friends.

In addition to game highlights, Instagram adds new dimensions to the world of sports. It’s where you see, for example, what new tennis shoes tennis legend Roger Federer will be wearing at his next tournament.

Mashable recently reported that in 16 states across the U.S., the most popular location to Instagram from was a sports stadium or arena. Instagram is where consumption of sports on social platforms truly thrives. Instagram has experienced rapid user adoption rates. It’s become a great way to share sports and the fire of experience visually and in real time. Instagram is a natural fit for fans and athletes who interact and exist in the visually stimulating and picturesque world of sports. Increasingly, fans are using the app to keep track of and interact with their favorite teams and athletes. In December, Instagrammers eclipsed the 300 million mark, surpassing Twitter. According to Business Insider, Instagram reached the youth tipping-point — more than half of teens and early twenty-somethings are on Instagram. On average, en masse, Instagrammers post 70 million images daily. That’s about 48,611 images every minute.  According to The New York Times, more than 70 percent of Instagram users are outside the U.S. Taking a page out Twitter’s successful playbook, Instagram launched a plan to verify accounts to ensure users know they are interacting with real athletes, teams and organizations. This authenticity reciprocity helps protect athletes who reach out fans via Instagram, while ensuring sports fans they are connecting with the real deal.
