Frequent System freeze with RX 480

I've been running into a rather annoying bug with the AMD Driver or GPUs. Whenever anything uses DirectX, OpenGL or Vulkan, the system will eventually be in a state of repeated perpetual freezing with an interval of 30 seconds or less - the freezes themselves lasting up to 5 seconds, affecting audio, input and networking. I can fix the freezes by removing any trace of the AMD drivers using DDU, or by using an Nvidia GPU instead.

The problem itself looks like this on the Wattman average activity graph, GPU activity drops from anything to 0% and will stay at 0% until it unfreezes.

I have so far tried:

  • Trying an older (17.5.2, 17.5.1, 17.4.4, 17.4.1, 17.3.1, 17.2.1, 16.12.1) driver.
  • Under- and overclocking the GPU.
  • Increase power limit to 50%. (Temporarily worked)
  • Turn on Power Saving. (Does that even do anything?)
  • Turn off Surface Optimization and Shader Cache. (Games loaded drastically faster and looked better)
  • Disabling FreeSync, GPU Scaling and VSR. (Didn't change a thing)
  • Changing Monitor Cables. (Well the cable's black instead of red now. Didn't help.)
  • Praying to the ancient technology gods. (Waiting for an answer.

  • Gigabyte AORUS AX370 Gaming K7
  • Ryzen 7 1800X (WaCo below 60°C while gaming)
  • 4x16GB DDR4 3200 Mhz CL14 (running at 2133 Mhz CL15)
  • AMD RX 480 8G Reference Model (see this screenshot)
  • M.2 SSD
  • 4x2TB Seagate HDD
  • 17.3.1 and up (currently using 17.4.4 as a test, same issue in 17.5.2)
