Can't login to ubuntu 16.04 after installing latest 17.10 amdgpu-pro driver, R9 390

Hello,

I am experiencing issues with the latest amdgpu-pro-17.10-450821.tar.xz driver.  I am running ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS.

My card is:

cpadwick@cpadwick-desktop:~/Downloads$ lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 vga

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Hawaii PRO [Radeon R9 290] [1002:67b1] (rev 80)

Subsystem: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd Hawaii PRO [Radeon R9 290] [1458:22c1]

    Kernel driver in use: radeon

I'm not sure why it is getting recognized as a 290, I believe it is a 390 (the box states it is an R9 390).

I followed the instructions here: How-To Install/Uninstall AMD Radeon™ Software AMDGPU-PRO Driver for Linux® on an Ubuntu System http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/AMDGPU-PRO-Install.aspx

Everything appeared to complete successfully.  Upon reboot, ubuntu shows me the login screen (in low res mode).  When I go to login the screen flashes as if it is trying to set a video mode and fails, then the login screen shows again.

Does anyone have any debugging ideas, things to try?

Thanks!
